Reserve Forces Day this weekend

2/07/2008 9:40:00 AM
The countdown is on for the Parkes Reserve Forces Day.

Reserve Forces Day in Parkes will be held this Saturday starting with a short service at 11am at the Cenotaph in Cooke Park then moving to the Army Reserve depot in Thornbury Street.

A barbeque lunch will be provided with an afternoon of fellowship and rekindling memories of times gone by.

A dinner will then be held at the Army Reserve depot on Saturday night for those members attending the Reserve Forces Day celebration.

This year is expected to be another great day with many ex-serving and current members enjoying the usual great times with old mates at the Parkes Army Reserve depot.

Interest so far this year has come from ex members from Mudgee, Canowindra, Condobolin and Dubbo.

The invitation is to all current and former serving members of the Australian Defence Force Reserves including any members who served as a National Servicemen in the last 60 years.

For further information for Parkes and surrounding district, contact Terry Knowles on 6862 2639 or Greg Godde on 0429 398236.

Reserve Forces Day celebrates the occasion when the nation will recognise the military service of 1.25 million part time soldiers since 1948.

The 2008 celebrations will be remembering the 60 years since the re-raising of the Citizen Military Forces (CMF) Reserves on July 1, 1948, and the Citizen Air Force on April 19, 1948, with the Royal Australian Naval Reserve re-raised July 1, 1950.

The famous Army units that were re-raised throughout Australia on that date will be celebrating their 60th birthday in 2008.

Reserve Forces Day 2008 will comprise street marches in Sydney and rural cities and towns in NSW.

The national parade in Sydney will be held on Sunday.

To mark the occasion the Reserve Forces Day Council is producing a Diamond Jubilee certificate to distribute to the marchers but this will only be available to the persons who register on the day.

Unit associations are keen to hear from former comrades, or anyone interested in membership irrespective of former corps, ship or squadron affiliations.

The message is - make contact, register and join in the Reserve Forces day celebrations.

13/08/2008 | I heard the funniest thing this week: Google Earth exists because a little man ran around with a video camera filming the entire Earth including all the towns and every single house. I think he’s related to the little man inside our refrigerators that turns off the light.
