Former local Peter McMahon will have the hopes of the Parkes area firmly behind him when he takes part in the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
The 26-year old will contest the showjumping section of the equestrian.
Born and raised in Tullamore, Peter learned his trade on the local show circuit and is now ready for the most elite of competitions.
McMahon gained slection after competing in Australian Final Olympic Selection Event in Aach, Germany.
Riding KS Genoa, McMahon’s team finished in the top three, placing him in prime position to be in the Olympic squad that will be officially confirmed soon.
McMahon is married to his coach Michelle Lang, who has also competed at world class events as a showjumper.
They live in Waterford, Queensland, with their three girls Maleah (4) and twins Emily and Elkie (four months).
The couple work within the equestrian industry, with Peter breaking in horses despite being a fully qualified diesel mechanic.
His parents Kevin and Robyn are popular residents in Tullamore and are very proud of his achievements.
‘He started riding when he was six years old and it has just gone on from there,’ Robyn said.
‘After completing a scholarship at Scoble and Nash, he was lucky enough to get some really good horses and be able to compete at a high level.
‘He was leaned to ride with the Tullamore Pony Club and competed at all the local shows and riding events.’
Peter showed his talents at any early age, winning the Australian Young Rider Championship and Australian Junior Championships.
The showjumping events will take place in Hong Kong on August 15, 17 and 21.
