Parkes Spacemen reserve grade team was full of confidence last Sunday after 17 players turned up ready to play, however four significant injuries throughout the game turned the day sour and CYMS recorded a 40-12 victory.
With inspirational captain Neil Ward unable to play due to an injury from the previous week, Ricky Newham stepped into the breach and led the team admirably.
However, injuries to five-eighth Mitch Howell and Trent Usher early in the game upset the Parkes boy’s rhythm and cohesion.
It was good to see some players back in the Spacemen fold with Nathan Baker making a welcome return and still showing he has certainly not lost any talent while operating a drill rig, Leon Goodwin also made a return from injury along with Mark Raynor and Chris Lewis.
The first half CYMS certainly made the most of the northerly wind to lead 18-6 at half time and the Parkes boys were certainly still in the match if they could control the ball and look for good field position.
However, the injury toll was starting to mount with Kel Bakker injuring his shoulder and Rob Milse limping off mid way through the second half.
A mix up with Joe Spicer saw the revitalised front rower replaced as a reserve for first grade which then left the reserve grade team with only 12 players for the last 20 minutes.
CYMS certainly took advantage running in some late tries which blew the score out and was not a true reflection of the commitment and effort the reserve grade side showed on the day.
Players player went to Leon Goodwin, Nathan Baker was great, Ricky Newham made a 1,000 tackles, Johnny Crook and Brett Shambrook were great in the back row, Adam Little tried hard all day and Jason Pitt looked solid and will be better for the run.
Mitch Roberts and Josh Wild did not get a lot of action but were also solid and Ben Ryan backed up from rugby the day before and did not let anybody down. Chris Lewis was strong in all areas of his game.
The club would like to thank the players for their efforts and apologises for the mix up at the end of the game.
