A good field contested the inaugural Bernie Wright Memorial Day at the Parkes Golf Club last Saturday.

Geoff Wright, on behalf of the Wright trophy, congratulated all players and the Golf Club for its commitment to honour his late father and expressed the family’s desire to honour his father with a perpetual event that could signify his love of golf and the Parkes Golf Club.

The Wright family was represented by Bernie’s wife Coral along with sons Geoff and his wife Kim, Tony and “cousin” Julian.

With members contesting an 18 hole 4BBB stableford event for trophies donated by the Wright family, it was club president Paul Thomas and Mike Smith who had the distinction of being the inaugural winners with a well compiled 48 points - Smith produced one of his finest performances in recording 42 points.

Runner ups on the day were Phil Bishop and Laurie Wakefield on 47 points.

Other ball winners included Tom Casey and Tony Hendry 45; Mike Donohue and Wayne Tucker 44; Daniel Ward and Ron Boness 43; and on 42 points were Greg Brown and Phil Barnard, Michael and Gai Mitchelson, John Chew and Justin Sutton and Allan Harkins and Don Kirwan.

In the individual event played in conjunction, Justin Sutton claimed the voucher on 40 points.

In the day’s nearest the pin awards Peter Dixon and Barry Parker stole the limelight in winning two awards each.

Dixon claimed the Telescope Tyres and Batteries 6th hole at 70cms and the Westlime 15th hole at 440cms while Parker finished just 42cms away on the Harvey Norman 11th hole and finished 220cms away with his second shot on the 18th hole in claiming the cash jackpot.

Other nearest the pin winners were Tom Casey at 519cms on the Linfox Australia, 1st hole, Barry Scott at 105cms on the Dirt Doctor Landscaping 4th hole and Steve Riley at 129cms with his second shot to the Miskells Tyrepower 9th hole.

The BAKM Bradmans award went to Mick Miller and Len Sunderland.

Only a small field of 24 players contested last Thursday’s 12 hole stableford event in the weekly competition between the Parkes and Forbes Veterans Golfers at Forbes.

Despite the local knowledge it was a visiting Tasmanian golfer Rod Burk who returned the day’s best score of 27 points but then he was probably used to playing golf in very cold conditions.

Runner up to Burk was Alf Davies on 25 points while Ian Phipps and Ron Sanderson recorded nearest the pin awards.

In the Mick Miller Shield, Forbes edged out Parkes 145 to 138.

This Thursday the Veterans will return to Parkes for a further 12 hole event commencing at 12.30pm.

Members are reminded that entries are now open for the Annual Linfox Parkes Open Tournament and the prelude event the Harvey Norman 4BBB stableford on the weekend 20 and 21 September.

Entry forms for the 2008 Linfox Parkes Open are available at the Clubhouse or from Tony’s Golf House and will close 5pm Friday 5 September.

This weekend members will contest an 18 hole stableford event for Owen and Jan Crowley’s trophy and the event will also act as the fifth qualifying round of the Pybar Handicap Challenge while on Sunday it’s a nine hole medley stableford event for a club trophy.
