Upon meeting the Parkes Spacemen’s new recruits from Fiji, the first thing that stands out is their love of the game.
Alipate Noilea, Semisi Tora, Ilisoni Vonomateiratu and Epi Neiyoko Sadrodo - otherwise known as Pati, Semi, Ili and Epi – are four very laid back characters, but their eyes light up when football is mentioned.
When asked what they enjoy the most about rugby league, all four answered exactly the same way.
‘Everything. I just love playing the game.’
However, their wide grins soon disappeared when talk of playing for the Spacemen came up.
‘We are here to do our best for the Spacemen,’ Pati said with determination.
‘The most important thing for us is to win the entire competition.’
And if first impressions are anything to go by, the Fijian quartet could certainly have a big impact on the Spacemen’s prospects this season.
Pati and Epi have played all their junior football together and have both travelled to Australia before as members of the Fijian Sevens squad.
Pati is a tall and athletic five-eighth, while the nuggety Epi is in the mould of an NRL halfback.
Sightseeing is not a priority for Pati and Epi – they are all business.
‘I am looking forward to playing for Parkes,’ Pati said. ‘Winning the competition is the most important thing.
‘I would also like to be considered for representative teams.’
Epi knows how important this opportunity is for himself and his family.
‘I have always loved playing football but I have never had the chance to play for money before,’ Epi said.
‘This contract is very important to me and I will give my all for Parkes.’
Epi enjoys all aspects of playing in the halves and is equally happy to run, pass or kick.
‘I like doing everything. But my favourite thing about playing football is making a big tackle,’ he said with a grin.
Pati and Epi will be hoping to get some room to move after Ili and Semi set a platform from them up front.
Ili and Semi are both rangy backrow forwards who both look fit and strong.
Like Pati and Epi, the pair grew up together and have played all their football together.
‘Parkes is a very nice place,’ Semi said. ‘I am second rower in Fiji and I love to play football.
‘Ili and I always stick together, so that is why we are here.’
Ili is rather more shy than his counterparts but does not look like a man to mess with.
‘I play anywhere in the forwards. Lock, prop, second row,’ Ili said.
‘I just like to run through people and enjoy the game.’
All four players left their families behind in Fiji and are determined to make them proud even though they know it will be hard to be away from them.
However, the committee of Parkes Rugby League led by president Graham Cole has worked hard to help them settle in.
‘We will miss our families,’ Pati said. ‘But everybody has made us feel very welcome.
‘We would really like to thank the president (Cole) for bringing us here.’
After a testing pre-season the smile on Cole’s face was hard to miss.
‘It is great to have these guys here in time for the first game on Sunday,’ Cole said.
‘Paul Clyburn has done a wonderful job. He has put in so much work to get them here and it wouldn’t have happened without him.’
